Remix Dance Project, based in Cape Town, is an acclaimed contemporary dance initiative that brings together performers with physical disabilities and performers without. Remix is interested in exploring dance that values the honesty of the body and then surprisingly twists these tales and stories in space to create dance performances of unusual and outstanding perspective. Remix focuses on two aspects of dance development:
In 2005 Remix Dance Project became a full time professional company. It was founded in 2000 by Nicola Visser and Malcolm Black and in 2001 formalised as a Trust and Non-Profit Organisation. It has welcomed many theatre practitioners into the project since this time who have brought with them skills in physical theatre, mime, puppetry and voice work which has broadened the depth of knowledge and exploration within Remix's work. At present, Remix focuses on the contemporary dance genre drawing on release technique and contact improvisation as its primary discipline in training. Remix Dance Project is company-in-residence at the Centre for African Studies at the University of Cape Town and the Remix Studio is in Rosebank Hodgson Hall.
